Boom Boom…

Boom Crash Opera are an Australian rock band that have been creating music since the ’80’s. This is their latest press photo that I shot a few months ago in a friends tiny lounge room (Thanks Christian & Ellen!).

It was a tight squeeze with 5 band members, the 2 residents of the house, 2 assistants and myself, not to mention all of the photographic equipment, in a space approx. 3x4m. Oh, and that fabulous couch!

I remember going to see them perform in the 80’s and 90’s (letting my age slip here!) so many times, so I was pretty excited to be given the opportunity to photograph them to promote their upcoming gigs.

Nate, age 5…

This image of Nate was shot specifically for a group exhibition last year. Entitled “1 to 10”, the exhibition involved 10 photographers covering the ages 1 through 10. I was given age 5. I didn’t know Nate at all when I took this image, which can be a little challenging when they are as shy as he was. Once I had him talking about star wars, though (he likes the baddies best), he started to become a little more relaxed and I ended up with an interesting shot.

Lighting – one flash head shot through a large square soft box, right of camera at 45 degree angle.

Death Row…

One of my favourite images for many reasons, this little photographic montage was created for a visual communication class in early 2012. The process of creating this image really helped my mind to open up to the possibilities of using photography as an artistic medium. It was the moment where I realised that I could actually use photography to construct externally that which was fertilised within my imagination, as opposed to just capturing something that was seen or already there. I had finally found the means with  which to express and make sense of the internal. Oh happy days! And it was the first image that I actually sold in a gallery.

Nun…

NUN is an image that I created for my first group exhibition, MIMIC, in 2010. The exhibition brief was to create an image that was inspired by another artist, a piece of music or poetry. It was a fairly broad brief, which is always helpful when you have 15 other photographers involved!

Even though I was fairly new to photography at the time, I had discovered the incredible work of photographer/digital artist, Oleg Dou. So, with the surrealist images of his nuns firmly in mind, this was the end result.

“Veneer”…..a project

I have finally begun my graduation project for my photography studies. I have spent countless hours scouring op/thrift shops and market stalls for my props and costumes and now possess a mountain of all things pertaining to domestic bliss circa 1972!

I have created a fictional family with all of their idiosyncrasies, secrets, desires and fears. Over the next few months I hope to bring this family to life within a series of images that reveal the hidden, the unseen, within their lives.

I hope you enjoy this little preview…..my first attempt in what will be a long and exciting journey.
